What is a Ceilidh? Originally the word ceilidh (kay-lee) descended from the Gaelic word for ‘gathering’ or ‘party’… However, these days when people think of a ceilidh, they think of a fun-filled night of dancing, good music, and great company! We are thrilled to host a ceilidh featuring the amazing WHISKY KISS to celebrate our Society’s 50th Anniversary!

Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Whisky Kiss is a traditional Scottish ceilidh band featuring fiddle, accordion, bagpipes, and drums. As the only traditional ceilidh band with an iTunes Number One song (Jock’s Revenge), Whisky Kiss has performed at star-studded events around the world – such as New York Tartan Week and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, to name a few – and has been called “quite possibly The World’s Best Ceilidh Band”.

The band’s leader, Iain MacPhail, on accordion, is also the voiceover artist for various Visit Scotland adverts shown worldwide, so anyone attending their first ever ceilidh will be sure to have loads of fun learning the dancers, as Iain teaches everyone the dance moves (no experience required!).

The band is also delighted to have Hamish Drennan featured on the bagpipes in St Louis. Hamish has performed with Whisky Kiss from Singapore to his hometown of Inverness, and he is the rising star of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland. He, along with Sarah (on the violin), Slawek (on the drums), and Iain, are all hugely excited to be performing for the 50th Anniversary Ceilidh in St Louis!

What to expect at a Whisky Kiss Ceilidh: The best thing about a Scottish ceilidh is that it is a thoroughly sociable occasion – one of the best ways to have a social gathering from anywhere on earth. It’s a bold statement, but here’s a good reason why we know you’ll love it & have the best time🙂

Band leader Iain’s father (also called Iain MacPhail) was the accordionist to the late Queen Elizabeth II for the last 25 years of her life, performing at ceilidhs as Balmoral Castle twice a year. The Queen herself would dance every dance (even well into her nineties) and indeed she would set the dance list. Our ceilidh will feature the late Queen’s favorite dances.

On the dance floor, everyone is the same – and some of the dances are planned so that you switch partner and everyone dances with everyone else. So whether you are the local fisherman or the Queen herself, you end up dancing with everyone in the room. It’s an amazing “social mixer” and the band’s chart-topping music will have you dancing the night away!

Worried that you don’t know any of the moves in advance? Have no fear! There is a dance caller to teach everyone the moves The band will teach you all the dance steps.

And with Whisky Kiss, there’s a final additional twist, for your enjoyment.

The band figured out early on that after some ceilidh dances, you will want a chance to catch your breath, and to have a refreshment, to refuel before the next ceilidh dance. So don’t be surprised if the band has a little experimental ‘jam session’ in those moments, to keep the atmosphere red hot, while you cool down, where the band might just look to mix some well-known global hits, with trad instruments. Ever heard House of Pain (Jump Around) on the bagpipes or ACDC’s thunderstruck on fiddles & pipes? It will be that kind of thing. And once the jam has been jammed, we’ll get everyone back on the floor for the next ceilidh dance.

By the end of the night, you’ll be in a great position to judge if the Queen knew what she was talking about, with her love of a ceilidh!
